ArtWalk on the Bay: September 12 & 13, 2009
Extraordinary Art. Extraordinary Setting.

There is no more beautiful venue for enjoying the creative talents of the region’s finest artists than Embarcadero Marina Park North. ArtWalk on the Bay, produced by the same team that brings Mission Federal ArtWalk to Little Italy each April, not only showcases visual and performing artists—the setting itself is a work of art. Located directly behind San Diego’s Seaport Village, the eight acre park will be filled with art, music, food and interactive art experiences for children at KidsWalk.

Adding to the festivities this year, we are introducing the Bayside Lounge, serving wine, beer and signature bloody marys. A portion of proceeds from beverage sales benefit ArtReach, a not-for-profit art education program that brings professional artist/teachers into elementary schools offering enriching art experiences. Our wonderful partners at Fast Forward Events bring us the Bayside Lounge.

This event is made possible by our partners, the Port of San Diego, and admission is FREE!

Check out www.artwalkonthebay.org for registration and information.

ArtWalk on the Bay Automotive Sponsor:
Subaru - The Right Vehicle for the Times

Subaru is excited to announce that Motor Trend named the Subaru Forester its 2009 Sport/Utility of the Year™ because it does all the things that matter most in an SUV, incredibly well. We built Forester with uncompromising safety, go-anywhere capability and lasting durability, so when it came to making a choice out of an exceptional field, the Forester stood out.

After experiencing its road-gripping Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive, Motor Trend said "when it gets on dirt, it almost encourages you to go faster." The judges also noted that Forester had "the best observed fuel economy for an all-wheel drive SUV in this year's competition." After all, there's no point in having go-anywhere capability if you can't afford to get where you're going.

We'll take being called "green as you-know-what" as a compliment, and it tends to happen when all of your cars are built in a zero landfill plant. Forester is also the most affordable SUV in its class, so you can see why Motor Trend said "the traditional model for a SUV has changed into something smaller, more fuel-efficient, greener, more, well...Forester-y."

It's a good feeling when you're rewarded for doing things the right way, and we're proud to have built a responsible, versatile, right-sized utility vehicle. So when Motor Trend called Forester "the right vehicle for the times", it wasn't just for today but also for tomorrow. We want to continue building cars that enhance whatever you're doing. Whether it's a trip to the market or a trip to the mountains, it's what we've always done, and what we will continue to do.

Artists Michael Flohr and Robert Holton Join 6th Annual San Diego Bay Wine & Food Festival

The producers of the San Diego Bay Wine and Food Festival taking place November 18 – 22 at the Embarcadero Marina Park North (the same location as ArtWalk on the Bay) announce the selection of the festival artists for the 6th Annual wine and culinary extravaganza. Southern California natives Michael Flohr, whose artwork can be seen at Exclusive Collections Fine Art Galleries in San Diego and Robert Holton, whose paintings can be found at his Drizzle Studios in Anaheim and at Michael J. Wolf Galleries in San Diego, join the San Diego Festival as this year’s Festival Artist and Celebrity Artist, respectively. Flohr’s impressionist style paired with Holton’s embellished pop art, bring together the classical and popular, creating a unique visual combination for all to see.

Appearing as this year’s Celebrity Artist, Michael Flohr, a San Diego native, has gained popularity due to the avant-garde tone and impressionistic color found in his paintings. Flohr has blended the artistic elements of perspective, composition, and color to portray ordinary life experiences in a masterful way. An exhibit featuring a selection of Flohr’s paintings will be on display at the Grand Event on Saturday, November 21.

As this year’s Featured Artist, pop artist Robert Holton vividly portrays classic California icons and landmarks with a modern flair. The unique drizzle effect enhances his paintings, turning each work into a one-of-a-kind masterpiece. Holton will create the official poster for the 6th Annual Festival. The original art will be auctioned off at the AIWF Celebrity Chef Luncheon and Live Auction on November 22. Holton will appear at the Reserve Tasting and Grand Event to sign copies of this year’s Festival poster and showcase his artwork.

Museum of Contemporary Art La Jolla presents Abstraction for Everyday Life through September 6. Alice Aycock, Robert Irwin, Matt Mullican, and Robert Venturi are presented in this exhibition of promised gifts and works on paper from the Museum's collection. This grouping of works all utilize forms of architectural drawing, rendering, and sketching to represent abstracted and evocative states and ideas, as well as the opposite-drawing plans made to create functional objects and physical structures whose origins lie in theory and subjective perception. Architectural drawing is a widely accepted form of abstraction. Its many codes are universally understood and serve to translate a concept from its immaterial state, into a two-dimensional representation, and finally to a three-dimensional material condition inhabiting our everyday life.

Viva-CityA place for the people – Gerding Edlen

Once again, futurists seek to provide an economical and psychological boost to our waning progress. And once again, another study is commissioned to evaluate the viability of the Civic Center Complex.

With leases on current city-occupied buildings ready to expire, proactive steps are being taken to evaluate the present and future practicality of continuing on “as is” or taking a big leap into the future.

Over the last fifteen years, modern buildings, some extremely striking, have been sprouting up all over Downtown. Yet, in the center of it all, meekly hides our Civic Center Complex.

San Diego has it all–the finest weather, stunning geography, delightful people, and unsurpassed potential. So, why do some say San Diego lacks a creative vision to make our town rank among world-class cities? Could it be the attributes that make San Diego so desirable also contribute to our failure to craft an ideal metropolis? Do we create a place for people or allow people to stop the future in its place?

I question... Do we make way for the future or hold on to our past?

Read what your neighbors are thinking of rebuilding our center of government.
