San Diego Visual Arts Network DNA of Creativity
DNA of Creativity is a community collaboration project bringing together artists, scientists and educators to explore the power of fusing art and science. The project, led by the San Diego Visual Arts Network, was awarded a $25,000 grant that provides each team with $2,000 to explore their concept and showcase the creative process. Teams will include at least five members with a balance between artists, scientists and educators who will work together over an 18-month period to investigate a subject of their choosing through the lens of their respective disciplines. All projects will include a lesson plan that will be made available to educators throughout the county. Project proposals will be reviewed and selected by April 2012 by a panel of professionals in the art and science fields including Harvey Seifter, Art of Science Learning and Ron Newby, Bronowski, Art and Science Forum. Selected projects will be conducted between May 2012 - October 2013, and public presentations will be scheduled throughout 2013. The presentations may take the form of art works, publishable papers, photographs, film, music score, performance, theater piece or documented research experiment, as examples.
The application to participate is now available: www.sdvisualarts.net/sdvan_new/pdf/DNAappl.doc

Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego, La Jolla
Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego, La Jolla presents John Baldessari: A Print Retrospective from the Collections of Jordan D. Schnitzer and His Family Foundation, on display February 5 through May 13 at MCASD La Jolla. John Baldessari is an internationally celebrated artist, yet southern California is and has always been his home. He began his art making in his birthplace, National City, located between San Diego and the U.S./Mexico border. In 1960, MCASD, then the La Jolla Art Center, gave Baldessari his first exhibition. His relationship with the Museum has continued, including the 1997 one-person show National City. Once again MCASD is honored to welcome Baldessari back to the Museum, this time with an expansive survey of his entire body of printmaking.

Mingei International Museum
The Mingei International Museum presents San Diego's Craft Revolution: From Post-War Modern to California Design through April 15. This original exhibition documents a fascinating, inspiring and overlooked chapter of San Diego's recent past: the important contribution of San Diego craftsmen from the postwar period beginning in the 1940s up through the 1970s. This exhibit explores the progression from sleek modernism to unconventional handmade objects of use such as furniture, doors, jewelry and ceramics. Over 60 artists are featured in the show, including Toza and Ruth Radakovich, Rhoda Lopez, Jack Hopkins, Arline Fisch, Martha Longenecker, Ellamarie and Jackson Woolley, Larry Hunter, Kay Whitcomb and James Hubbell. Many of these San Diego-based artists received national attention and participated in major Los Angeles exhibitions, including the California Design series held in Pasadena and Los Angeles.

Oceanside Museum of Art
The Oceanside Museum of Art presents A Matter Of Space through February 12 at the Gerald and Inez Grant Parker Gallery. Informed by the boundless concept of space, local artist Cathy Breslaw creates a site-specific installation that uses industrial materials to investigate her interest in how people relate to changing physical and intangible environments. Through the twisting, stretching, painting, wrapping, slashing, tying, layering and folding of materials such as industrial mesh and wire, Breslaw embraces the challenge of manipulation while transforming commonly overlooked items, creating spatial awareness that transcends functionality and purpose.

Donate to the Arts on your Tax Form
Thanks to state legislation, there's a funding opportunity for California arts. Californians can contribute directly to the California Arts Council's programs when you file your state taxes — and it's tax deductible! All you have to do is designate the amount of the contribution to the Arts Council Fund on your state tax return (Form 540) in the "Contributions" section. The contribution will be deducted from the refund or added to the tax payment and transferred to the Arts Council Fund for arts programming. It can be claimed as a charitable contribution the next year.
We all pay taxes, and millions of California taxpayers receive refunds each year. Even a $1 donation can raise a tremendous amount for California arts!
Be sure to look for the Arts Tax Check Off on your tax return this year, and let your tax preparer or accountant know you want to use it. |
