San Diego's original fine art festival is celebrating its 28th year in 2012 and we have a very limited number of artist spaces available. Apply online today.

The two-day juried show attracts more than 100,000 attendees each year to the hip and historic Little Italy district in San Diego's downtown. The outdoor urban setting on the streets of Little Italy gives this event a unique flavor. In addition to fine art from artists across the country and Mexico, the festival features more than 30 musical performing groups and a park filled with interactive art for children at KidsWalk.

Mission Federal ArtWalk attracts tremendous publicity including print, online and broadcast media. Beyond the 2-day festival, the web site www.missionfederalartwalk.org serves as a searchable year-round resource that helps buyers connect with their favorite artists long after the event. The Anaheim Arts Council is now accepting artist's applications for the Art and Fine Craft Festival on Sunday, April 22. The monies raised go to graduating seniors in the local Anaheim community for the arts.

San Diego Visual Arts Network DNA of Creativity

DNA of Creativity is a community collaboration project bringing together artists, scientists and educators to explore the power of fusing art and science. The project, led by the San Diego Visual Arts Network, was awarded a $25,000 grant that provides each team with $2,000 to explore their concept and showcase the creative process. Teams will include at least five members with a balance between artists, scientists and educators who will work together over an 18-month period to investigate a subject of their choosing through the lens of their respective disciplines. All projects will include a lesson plan that will be made available to educators throughout the county. Project proposals will be reviewed and selected by April 2012 by a panel of professionals in the art and science fields including Harvey Seifter, Art of Science Learning and Ron Newby, Bronowski, Art and Science Forum. Selected projects will be conducted between May 2012 - October 2013, and public presentations will be scheduled throughout 2013. The presentations may take the form of art works, publishable papers, photographs, film, music score, performance, theater piece or documented research experiment, as examples.

SDG&E Utility Box Beautification

Electrical boxes, although vital to providing service, are often unsightly in vibrant downtown areas. All over San Diego organizations have taken the steps to transform these plain green boxes into fabulous works of art for the community to enjoy.

Mission Federal ArtWalk 2012

Would you like to participate in San Diego's largest annual showcase of visual and performing arts? Sign up to volunteer at the 2012 Mission Federal ArtWalk! We offer about 250 volunteers the opportunity to get involved on event days, this year taking place April 28 & 29, with a few positions during the month of April.

Current volunteer positions available include: magazine and postcard distribution throughout San Diego County in late March/early April, event setup (all days), event strike (Saturday and Sunday evening), booth sitters, block captains, selling merchandise, floater, helping with deliveries, conducting surveys, parking lot attendants, table tenders, and traffic control.

As a Mission Federal ArtWalk volunteer you receive our official 2012 T-shirt and may participate in a "volunteers-only" raffle of great artwork and prizes, donated by our artists and sponsors.

Friday Night Liberty Open Art Studios & Performances

San Diego State University Downtown Gallery

San Diego State University presents Recollection at the Downtown Gallery. Recollection is the third in a series featuring the work of faculty from the School of Art, Design, and Art History. The exhibition includes work that recalls the past and references life's experiences. Visions of tragedy and mystery as well as hope and redemption collide in imagery and objects. ArtHatch is excited to present a highly anticipated new show featuring the extraordinary work of Southern California artist Gabe Leonard, entitled Black Magic Method. Drawing inspiration from the lifestyles of mobsters, Gabe Leonard is exhibiting brand new paintings and drawings created specifically for this show. Meyer Fine Art

Meyer Fine Art is extending its Pacific Standard Time exhibition through February 25 featuring Clay Walker, augmented with a group of his San Diego contemporaries. These talented artists include Joe Nyiri, Barney Reid, Walter Wojtyla, Dan Dickey, Michael OMara and Allan Morrow. Their backgrounds and paths to San Diego's art scene are as varied as their artwork. Some are native San Diegans, with three still alive and working, one studied at Otis Art Institute in Los Angeles, some were connected with the San Diego Allied Craftsmen or the San Diego Art Guild. They worked in diverse media, sculpture, etchings, mixed media, painting, etc. They exemplify the artistic production and creativity of Southern California and modern art of the 20th century. San Diego Museum of Art

The San Diego Museum of Art is proud to present Mexican Modern Painting from the Andrés Blaisten Collection through February 19. The Andrés Blaisten Collection is one of the premiere collections of 20th-century Mexican art. Assembled over the last 25 years, the collection normally resides at its permanent home at the Centro Cultural Universitario Tlatelolco.  This exhibition features a selection of 80 paintings dated between 1907 and 1956 from this renowned collection as part of a traveling tour of the Blaisten Collection. The exhibited artists include well-known painters María Izquierdo, Diego Rivera, David Alfaro Siqueiros, Rufino Tamayo, and many others. In addition to these important painters, there are several painters with works in the exhibition that might be new to San Diego audiences such as Alfonso Michel, Federico Cantú, and Angel Zárraga.

Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego, Downtown

Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego, Downtown presents Isaac Julien: Ten Thousand Waves February 25 through December 1 at MCASD Downtown, Jacobs Building. British artist Isaac Julien is acclaimed for his arresting films as well as his dynamic gallery installations. Ten Thousand Waves, his most ambitious project to date, poetically weaves together stories linking China's ancient past and present. This nine-screen video installation explores the movement of people across countries and continents and meditates on unfinished journeys. The film's original musical score is by fellow east Londoner Jah Wobble and the Chinese Dub Orchestra and Maria de Alvear.

Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego, La Jolla

Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego, La Jolla presents John Baldessari: A Print Retrospective from the Collections of Jordan D. Schnitzer and His Family Foundation, on display February 5 through May 13 at MCASD La Jolla. John Baldessari is an internationally celebrated artist, yet southern California is and has always been his home. He began his art making in his birthplace, National City, located between San Diego and the U.S./Mexico border. In 1960, MCASD, then the La Jolla Art Center, gave Baldessari his first exhibition. His relationship with the Museum has continued, including the 1997 one-person show National City. Once again MCASD is honored to welcome Baldessari back to the Museum, this time with an expansive survey of his entire body of printmaking.

Mingei International Museum

The Mingei International Museum presents San Diego's Craft Revolution: From Post-War Modern to California Design through April 15. This original exhibition documents a fascinating, inspiring and overlooked chapter of San Diego's recent past: the important contribution of San Diego craftsmen from the postwar period beginning in the 1940s up through the 1970s. This exhibit explores the progression from sleek modernism to unconventional handmade objects of use such as furniture, doors, jewelry and ceramics. Over 60 artists are featured in the show, including Toza and Ruth Radakovich, Rhoda Lopez, Jack Hopkins, Arline Fisch, Martha Longenecker, Ellamarie and Jackson Woolley, Larry Hunter, Kay Whitcomb and James Hubbell. Many of these San Diego-based artists received national attention and participated in major Los Angeles exhibitions, including the California Design series held in Pasadena and Los Angeles.

MOPAThe Museum of Photographic Arts presents Eyes of a Nation: A Century of American Photography, February 11 through May 13. Eyes of a Nation, drawn from MOPA's permanent collection, is a look at the rich history of American photography by artists working in the 1870s-1970s. Eyes of a Nation explores the groundbreaking movements and photographers who helped shape photography at an important time in the development of our country. The exhibition presents an important story of American photography focused on social reform, artistic expression, and the dramatic political and cultural changes experienced during that time.

Oceanside Museum of Art

The Oceanside Museum of Art presents A Matter Of Space through February 12 at the Gerald and Inez Grant Parker Gallery. Informed by the boundless concept of space, local artist Cathy Breslaw creates a site-specific installation that uses industrial materials to investigate her interest in how people relate to changing physical and intangible environments. Through the twisting, stretching, painting, wrapping, slashing, tying, layering and folding of materials such as industrial mesh and wire, Breslaw embraces the challenge of manipulation while transforming commonly overlooked items, creating spatial awareness that transcends functionality and purpose.

Donate to the Arts on your Tax Form

Thanks to state legislation, there's a funding opportunity for California arts. Californians can contribute directly to the California Arts Council's programs when you file your state taxes — and it's tax deductible! All you have to do is designate the amount of the contribution to the Arts Council Fund on your state tax return (Form 540) in the "Contributions" section. The contribution will be deducted from the refund or added to the tax payment and transferred to the Arts Council Fund for arts programming. It can be claimed as a charitable contribution the next year.

We all pay taxes, and millions of California taxpayers receive refunds each year. Even a $1 donation can raise a tremendous amount for California arts!

Be sure to look for the Arts Tax Check Off on your tax return this year, and let your tax preparer or accountant know you want to use it.

2012 Nations of San Diego International Dance Festival: Passion, Magic and Beauty of the World on One Stage

Experience the beauty and passion of the music and dance of the world at Nations of San Diego International Dance Festival, Friday, February 10 at 8:00 PM, Saturday, February 11 at 2:00 PM and 8:00 PM, and Sunday, February 12 at 2:00 PM at the Coronado Performing Arts Center, 650 D Avenue, Coronado.  Now in it's 18th year, Nations brings traditional dancers from over 15 cultures together in a state-of-the art theater for a weekend of magical performances rarely seen together in one setting. Over 150 dancers and musicians from every continent share dance traditions that transport audiences to exotic lands for a taste of authentic art forms.

Old Globe

The Old Globe presents Dividing the Estate on stage through February 12. Nominated for a 2009 Tony Award for Best Play, the Broadway production of Pulitzer Prize winner Horton Foote's knowing comedy about family, money, power and greed is having its West Coast premiere at The Old Globe! Living in present day Texas and ruled by octogenarian matriarch Stella, the family must confront their past as they prepare for an uncertain future when their family fortune begins to diminish. Stella's children debate whether or not they should divide the estate while their mother is still alive in order to ensure themselves financial independence. This is a co-production with Alley Theatre.

Cygnet Theatre

Cygnet Theater in Old Town presents A Behanding in Spokane, a hilarious black comedy from award-winning Irish playwright, Martin McDonagh. This southern California premiere marks McDonagh's first American-set play. The title is just the starting point; take a man searching for his missing hand, two con artists out to make a few hundred bucks, and an overly curious hotel clerk, and the rest is up for grabs. A Behanding in Spokane is on stage through February 19 and contains violence and strong language.
