Horne is a 28-year-old native San Diegan and a SDSU graduate with a degree in graphic design. His true passion, though, is photography. Ben works at Nelson Photo in the heart of Little Italy as both a salesperson and a teacher. During his classes he appreciates the opportunity to share his knowledge of photography with other photographers. Ben’s subject of choice is nature, a likely one for an avid camper and hiker. His background in graphic design strongly influences his photographic style -- simple, graphic, and highly structured images of nature
Versed in both digital and film, Ben prefers to work with large format film. These cameras are bulky, difficult to use, and expensive to operate. Despite these challenges, he is drawn to large format because of the unparalleled print quality, and full control over the final image. Ben explains his preference this way: “Rather than focus my attention on small prints, I choose to produce only oversize, wall-filling enlargements. I encourage viewers to stand close to my prints, and immerse themselves in the scene. The prints are large enough to fill one's peripheral vision. I want the viewer to feel as though they are standing beside me at the location, and viewing the grandeur of nature in person. When displayed on a wall, the prints are like a window to another world.”
